Brief Affiliate Marketing Guide

Step by step guide for product promotion

Here is a brief step by step guide on how to be an affiliate marketer and easily promote your products.

1. Do you have a website or blog?

If you already have a website or blog, great! If not, it's best to create one. You can go either of two ways. You can create a website or blog about something you are really passionate and knowledgeable, advised, or you can create one on the subject of a product category you are planning to promote.

When you are creating a website or blog, remember to make the name clear and specific. You want the search engines to quickly index your page so people can be directly taken to it. You need to think about what it is people will be searching in to find your page. If you are creating a page purely to promote a product category try to steer away from filling the title with keywords like, cheap, sale or free. These are very common keywords and are often ignored by large search engines like Google.

Try to make your title stand out but keep it closely related to your content. A free tool like
Google Keyword Tool is a great way to find the best keywords for your promotion, rated by search volume and competition. When you have found a suitable 'keyword phrase' ensure that it is the main part of your title and is naturally incorporated in the page content. Also remember to write an accurate page description as well as this will help your page get picked up by search engines, but do not keyword stuff!

2. Write, write, write!

Now get writing. It is important you have some killer content on your website or blog. Something that interests the reader, makes them glad they went to your site and will make them want to return. If you're not a literary genius you can always pay to have an article written to your specifications to draw in some early traffic. You can even find freely re-potable articles that only require you keep the original authors name.

Make sure that your content is informative and friendly as this is what the reader will have been looking for when they clicked on your link from a search engine or somewhere else. It is important that you do not simply sell to your reader. This will put them off and there is less chance of them clicking your affiliate links. Just write honestly and promote second. This will appeal to the reader and help them trust you and your opinions, thus helping to get referrals and create backlinks.

3. Promote your website or blog

It may seem odd to try and promote your website or blog before you have found a product to promote but it is important to build a sustained level of traffic and returning readers purely from site content. You need to be able to attract readers to your site before you promote products. If you promote while you are still building site traffic it will make your site look spammy and it is likely the reader will not trust you. They will see that you are not interested in the content of your site but simply looking to get referrals. This is not the impression you want to give.

So, promote your site through social networking sites, forums and article marketing. Article marketing is a great way to promote your site at this point as it is another example of quality content created by you. This will attract readers back to your site and if the article builds a lot of traffic itself it may get indexed in search engines and create backlinks of its own. This is the ideal goal.

4. Join an Affiliate Marketing site or Network

Join one of the affiliate marketing sites listed at the top of this lens. They are the perfect place to find products and merchants to promote and build an affiliate portfolio. You can easily create lots of contracts with merchants to promote lots of different products. This creates several revenue streams as you are earning money through each affiliate program. Make sure that the affiliate programmes you join are clearly related to your content. If you promote even a vaguely un-related product this can confuse the reader and will make it very difficult to get them clicking!

5. Find products to promote

Use the affiliate marketing networking sites to find products to promote. Choose your products wisely as they need to clearly relate to the content of your site. Pick products that you have genuine opinions on and write about them honestly. Make sure that you understand the product and can give a clear description of what it is and what's good about it.

Remember to plan your new content around each product you are trying to promote. So, pick a product and then plan an article or webpage of content that will compliment it, and then add your product promotion within that. This will help your promotion blend in with your site or blog and not look like a random money making attempt.

6 Re-promote your site

It is now important to get back out there and promote your site again. This time you can promote your product promotions as well. You will now be building traffic from two types of reader; those who are going to your site for its quality original content and those who are going there to see your products promotions. This will maximize chances of referrals and therefor commissions.

Article marketing makes another appearance here. It is a great way to promote your affiliate program. If you write an article or review about your product you can promote it directly through that piece of work and build traffic back to your main website or blog.

7 Repeat

Repeat steps 5-6. Continue building your affiliate portfolio and site content. Keep promoting your site and your affiliate programmes. You will constantly be developing your site and promotions as well as your personal affiliate techniques. You will never stop evolving your ideas and learning about new and better ways to make money as an affiliate marketer.
